As per the case facts the appellants and respondent entered into an oral agreement to sell a property A dispute arose when the respondent claimed to have made part payment ... while the appellants alleged failure to pay the required advance This civil dispute led to criminal proceedings and a chargesheet being filed against the appellants which they appealed to the Supreme Court The question arose whether civil wrongs were being inappropriately converted into criminal proceedings through the filing of chargesheets Finally the Supreme Court quashed the FIR and all resulting criminal proceedings including the chargesheet clarifying that its decision pertained only to the criminal aspect and not the parties' civil rights The Court also imposed costs on the State for allowing civil disputes to be pursued as criminal matters
